Common sensor types (smallest to largest)
- 1 inch
- Micro 4/3
- APSC
- Full frame
- Medium format
Why sensor size matters ?
- Larger sensors introduce more dynamic range
- Larger sensors capture larger fields of view
- Larger sensors capture more light and will create less grain in lower light
- Larger sensors can capture larger resolutions with less megapixels
- Larger sensors will create images with larger file sizes
Does Megapixel count matter ?
- It depends
- Higher megapixel sensors are able to capture more detail in an image because of the higher amount photo diodes present in the sensor
- Higher megapixel count can introduce more grain into an image in low light settings though, especially with smaller sensors
- High megapixels images will be compressed to smaller megapixel formats when uploaded to platforms like Instagram and you will lose detail
- Higher megapixel images are much larger file sizes, especially RAWs
